Electronic/Computer Engineer (Contract-To-Hire)

Summary

The electrical engineer designs, prototypes, and tests customer-based hardware projects that involve circuit boards and other electrical components, developing and upgrading firmware for AVR and ARM microcontrollers. Engineer should ensure DFM/DFA practices and review circuits prior to manufacturing. She/he is also responsible for assembling the circuit boards and troubleshooting them to ensure proper functionality. In order to do this, sourcing electronic components in a cost effective manner for circuit assembly may be required. Lastly, the engineer manages projects for customer-based products that involve electrical and/or mechanical aspects.

Type: Contractor-To-Hire, Full Time

Rate: Based on experience

Schedule: Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm

Duties and Responsibilities

  • PCB Design
    • Prototype circuit for testing
    • Design schematic circuit using Eagle
    • Meet with CAD Engineer to discuss design layout (if necessary)
    • Design PCB layout
    • Order PCB and source components for assembly
  • Testing
    • Assemble PCB (if necessary)
    • Inspect PCB to make sure it was built correctly
    • Create testing procedure to ensure proper functionality of the circuit
  • Troubleshooting
    • In case the circuit does not work as expected, find the issue and fix it
    • Modify design files as needed (if required)
  • Programming
    • Develop firmware to drive the circuit and have a functional device that meets the customer’s specifications (if necessary).
  • Communication with customer
    • Communicate with customer to obtain all the required information for the project, and let him or her know about any limitation the requirements might have
    • Keep customer updated with the progress of the project
    • Answer any questions the customer may have along the production process
    • Provide documentation to customer regarding their product

Skills

  • Circuit design / Prototyping skills
  • Proficiency in Eagle CAD
  • Proficiency in C/C++ language
  • Proficiency in Linux
  • Ability to interpret datasheets of electronic components
  • Ability to use Weller solder iron and hot air machine
  • Ability to operate oscilloscopes and power supplies
  • Knowledge of PCB design, microprocessors, sensors, wireless technology and embedded systems
  • Clear understanding of electronic fundamentals
  • Knowledge in microcontrollers, sensors, wireless technology and embedded systems
  • Ability to design electronic circuits
  • Ability to read and understand datasheets for electronic components
  • Ability to program in C/C++
  • Ability to troubleshoot circuit boards
  • Good time management
  • Ability to have good communication with customers
  • Troubleshooting skills
  • Good understanding of electrical health and safety regulations
  • Familiarity with office-specific software (basic training provided): Fishbowl, Google Apps, and Synology
  • Proficiency of Google Products such as Gmail, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Calendar (equivalent to Microsoft’s Excel, Word, PPT, and Outlook)
  • Attention to detail and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team

  • Good verbal and written communication (both technical and non-technical)

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
  • At least 2 years experience related to duties and responsibilities specified above
  • Highly skilled with computers
  • Solid understanding of the fundamentals of electric circuits
  • Background in technical writing
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Great work ethic
  • Must be available Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm
  • Familiarity in the Manufacturing and/or Electronics industries a plus

Working Environment

Little physical activity in a calm, office-like environment. The position requires to be sitting down operating a computer most of the time. Occasionally, it is necessary to walk back and forth from electronics station to the testing and assembly areas. Work environment involves the risk of getting burned when using the Weller solder iron and/or the hot air machine.

Reports to: Chief Engineer

Works closely with: Chief Engineer, CAD Engineer, Quality Supervisor, Engineering Intern and Firmware Programmer

Occasionally interacts with: Operations Manager

Position’s performance is based on:

  1. Quality of circuit board designs
  2. Speed in which engineering challenges are addressed
  3. Ability to troubleshoot mistakes and errors in design
