Mechanical Engineer (Product Development)

Summary: Develops new products from (1) concept to (2) prototyping to (3) mass manufacturing through the delivery of both technical drawing packages and physical prototypes for testing. Applies user experience principles, ensuring products meet client requirements and are user-friendly. Products should also be designed for manufacturability and their assembly process should be as streamlined and efficient as possible. Hands-on prototyping experience with 3D printing, CNC, and other processes is required.

Type: Full-time

Salary: $50,000 to $65,000/year

Schedule: Monday through Friday 8am-5pm

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Uses conceptual design and 3D CAD modeling to design products that meet the objective of the project proposal.
  • Performs design validation testing of prototypes and off-tool samples, proposing design modifications to guarantee manufacturing efficiency and compliance with technical specifications.
  • Specify tolerances, materials, manufacturing processes, heat treatment, coatings and bill of materials.
  • Writes documentation defining product performance requirements and manufacturing/ assembly outline to ensure high level of product quality.
  • Oversees technicians during product assembly, offering troubleshooting and analysis as needed
  • Perform field testing, translating observations from field research into proposals.
  • Research competing & related products and technologies.
  • Works with sourcing specialists, providing accurate information for smooth purchasing and ensuring product requirements are met.
  • Communicates with client directly or indirectly about project-related items, submitting weekly updates on projects.
  • Project manage projects by ensuring all members are up to date on status of project and deadlines are being met.

  • Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering (or related)
  • At least 5 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified (not including academic years)
  • Experience with consumer products and user experience.
  • Experience with manufacturing
  • CNC machining and 3D printing experience
  • Knowledge of Solidworks, AutoCad, or similar.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
  • 3D Design and Drafting experience

Working Environment

Low physical activity. Requires sitting for most of the time. May require exposure to chemicals due to prototyping materials such as epoxy and synthetic clay.

Works closely with: Electrical Engineer, Clients, Global Sourcing Specialists, Industrial Designer
